The church, built on the original foundation of her house, has been recognized by three popes: Pope Paul VI in 1967(unofficially confirming its authenticity), Pope John Paul II in 1979, and Pope Benedict XVI in 2006. In the 6th century A.D., Roman Emperor Justinian commissioned the construction of the Basilica of St. John, one of the largest basilicas in Christendom, built directly over his tomb. This awe-inspiring structure featured grand domes, intricate mosaics, and stunning architectural details, reflecting the spiritual and historical importance of St. John.
