St. John is said to have lived in Ephesus after his exile on the island of Patmos, where he wrote the Book of Revelation. Following his death, his disciples buried him on this sacred hill, marking the site of profound spiritual significance.

In the 6th century AD, Emperor Justinian I ordered the construction of a grand basilica atop St. John's tomb, creating one of the largest and most magnificent churches in Christendom.
